Activities testing and proving digital I&C system compliance are closely connected to each stage of the development process that allows to identify the design issues (e.g., coding inconsistencies) early in the I&C development cycle.

The reviews, verification and validation (V&V) are directed towards the conformation that I&C systems and all their components are implemented and functioning in full compliance with the requirements and conditions set at the previous stages. V&V activities are planned for all projects and appropriate records are generated; every V&V document (plan or report) describes procedures/ methods and the tools used.

The following V&V methods are in use:
  • review and inspection with the use of checklists;
  • various types of analysis, including Static Code Analysis, FMEDA etc.;
  • modeling with the use of emulators;
  • various types of testing, including functional testing, fault injection testing, load and validation testing, with the use of automation facilities.

According to Company practice, the use of proven V&V tools (independent from development tools) is preferred over manual methods. The required tools are purchased only from long-established vendors, such as Mentor Graphics, Aldec Inc., National Instruments Corporation, with a good track record of Configuration Management (CM), V&V, problem notification and resolution, and support and training materials. Company QMS prescribes that all commercial software tools used for V&V should be tested and evaluated. Beside the commercial software tools there are custom software and hardware tools for V&V activities, like Test Benches (including (Very high speed integrated circuits) Hardware Description Language (VHDL) code verification, integration and validation testing).

RPC Radiy V&V capability is represented by STC (interacting with the technical department) which is technically, administratively and financially independent from the Design Bureaus. Personnel which perform V&V activities have strong theoretical background and practical experience of software and FPGA Electronic Design (ED) testing and verification.

Thus, Company V&V best practices, accumulated during projects implementation, assure that RPC Radiy I&C meets the requirements of international standards and national regulatory documents.

These best practices also comply with the similar V&V approaches followed by other utilities, contractors, and suppliers involved in specifying or designing FPGA-based safety and non-safety I&C solutions in NPPs [3].
