Nuclear power plant equipment modernization program:

Reactor Automatic Regulation, Discharge, Limited Power,

and Accelerated Preventative Protection

The Reactor Automatic Regulation, Discharge, Limited Power, and Accelerated Preventative Protection is based on the RadICS Platform and is designed for use with both new and existing VVER reactors.

The Reactor Automatic Regulation, Discharge, Limited Power, and Accelerated Preventative Protection was developed using the rules and recommendations of:

  • International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC),
  • International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA),
  • US National Research Council.

Continuous system diagnostics are assured by integrated diagnostic devices maintained independently of the safety functional diagram and integrated coding.

The System performs the following functions:

  • Automatic regulation of reactor neutron power and/or pressure in the main steam header (MSH) of nuclear power unit turbine;
  • Discharge and reactor power limitation at the levels corresponding to the scope of the commissioned main process equipment of nuclear power unit;
  • Accelerated preventative protection (fast reactor discharge by 40-50% of power within 3-4 sec.) at non-authorized equipment cutoffs.

To improve protection actuation reliability, the Reactor Automatic Regulation, Discharge, Limited Power, and Accelerated Preventative Protection System has three levels of output conditioning based on 2 out of 3 voting logic.

If required by the licensing regulations, the system can use 2 out of 4 configuration.

Between 2004 and 2012, 11 Reactor Automatic Regulation, Discharge, Limited Power, and Accelerated Preventative Protection Systems were designed manufactured, supplied, and installed at Ukrainian nuclear power plants:  Rivne – 3 systems; South-Ukrainе – 2 systems; Khmelnytskyi – 3 systems; Zaporizhzhia – 3 systems.
